Since the beginning of the 20th century, the surface of the forest multiplied by three in Limousin, to reach 560000 ha.

This development was realized thanks to plantations, mainly conifers, or by natural extension of the forest on moors and the feed were abandoned by the agriculture.

The rate of afforestation, corresponding to the percentage between the surface of the forest and that of the territory Limousin, is 33 %, what places Limousin on the eighth place in France.

However, it is advisable to note that this rate is very variable within the region, passing from 15 % to 70 % according to places. It is the zone of the mountain limousine which is the most afforested.
